The BFI Certification Unit is the first point for contact for applicants wanting to qualify their film, high-end television programme, animation programme, video games or children’s television programme as British through the cultural test or as an official co-production and to access the UK’s creative sector tax reliefs. Qualifying a film as British can enable producers to access the UK’s film tax relief as well as to the BFI Film Fund or for funding in the UK’s nations and regions. The Certification unit offer guidance on the cultural test and official co-production, and the respective application process. The applicant must be a limited liability film production company (FPC) within the charge of UK Corporation tax and the company must be incorporated before principal photography begins.
